Chapter 01 / Diamond Academy

A story written in the earth

Natural diamonds form deep within the earth under intense heat and pressure. Their journey begins long before a rough crystal reaches the hands of a diamond cutter.

Cutting and polishing reveal the way a stone returns light. Understanding that relationship between nature and craftsmanship is the beginning of choosing a diamond with confidence.

Chapter 02 / Diamond Academy

The language of diamond quality

Cut, colour, clarity and carat weight describe different qualities of a diamond. Consider them together, alongside how the stone looks to you.

Cut
Proportions and craftsmanship influence how a diamond reflects light, creating brightness, fire and sparkle.

Colour
The D-to-Z scale describes the absence of colour, from colourless to increasing yellow or brown tones. Fancy-colour diamonds are assessed differently.

Clarity
Internal inclusions and surface blemishes are evaluated under magnification. A grade is one part of understanding a stone’s appearance.

Carat weight
Carat measures weight, rather than diameter. Shape and proportions also influence how large a diamond looks.

Chapter 03 / Diamond Academy

Shape, size and proportion

Shape gives a diamond its silhouette. Round, oval, cushion, pear, princess and Asscher each offer a different balance of lines and light.

A round brilliant has a classic circular outline. Oval and pear shapes create an elongated impression, while cushion cuts soften their geometry with rounded corners. Princess cuts are square; Asscher cuts use stepped facets and clipped corners.

Carat weight alone does not tell you how large a stone will appear. Compare its measurements, proportions and appearance in the setting.

A note on size guides

Size illustrations are a visual reference. Actual dimensions vary with a diamond’s shape and proportions, and images on a screen are not a guarantee of physical size.

Chapter 04 / Diamond Academy

Clarity, considered carefully

Clarity describes the natural characteristics within a diamond and on its surface. The grading scale runs from Flawless through to Included.

For individually certified engagement diamonds in selected Orrling ring designs, we select from FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1 and VS2 grades.

We consider each diamond individually, including the position and visibility of its characteristics. A grading report and a closer look at the stone work together.

Understanding the clarity grades

FL / IF — Flawless / Internally Flawless.

VVS1 / VVS2 — Very, Very Slightly Included.

VS1 / VS2 — Very Slightly Included.

SI1 / SI2 — Slightly Included.

I1 / I2 / I3 — Included.

Clarity grading is performed under 10× magnification. The grade and the appearance to the unaided eye describe different aspects of a stone.

Chapter 05 / Diamond Academy

Confidence in every detail

An independent grading report records a diamond’s assessed characteristics. It gives you a consistent starting point for comparing stones.

Orrling diamonds over 0.30 carats are delivered with a grading report from laboratories including GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI. Review the issuing laboratory and the details of your individual diamond before choosing.

A report describes the stone; seeing it also helps you appreciate its character, proportions and response to light.

What is diamond fluorescence?

Fluorescence describes a diamond’s response to ultraviolet light. The strength is recorded separately on a grading report, from None to Very Strong.

Fluorescence does not by itself determine beauty or quality. Its visible effect varies, so the diamond should be considered individually and in different lighting.

Natural origin. Considered sourcing.

Orrling Jewellery works exclusively with natural diamonds. Their geological origin is central to our approach to jewellery.

We work with suppliers who follow international sourcing standards. Understanding a stone’s documentation and the practices behind its supply is part of selecting it.

Responsible sourcing

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme addresses the trade in conflict diamonds through controls on rough diamonds. It is one part of responsible sourcing, rather than a guarantee covering every ethical or environmental consideration.

Chapter 07 / Diamond Academy

The beginning of your ring

A setting gives a diamond its place within the design. A solitaire draws attention to one stone; a halo surrounds it with smaller diamonds. Pavé adds a line of sparkle, while a bezel frames the diamond in metal.

“A diamond should never compete with the design that holds it. The role of the ring is to elevate the stone—quietly, precisely, and with lasting elegance.”

— Håkan Orrling

Caring for your diamond

Gentle cleaning with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush helps maintain a diamond’s brilliance. Ask our atelier about care if your piece includes other gemstones or delicate settings.

Regular professional inspections help ensure the setting remains secure. Store pieces separately and remove jewellery before activities that could damage the stone or metal.

Frequently asked questions

What is diamond clarity?

Diamond clarity reflects the purity and rarity of a stone, determined by how easily its natural characteristics can be seen under 10x magnification. A diamond is considered flawless when no inclusions (internal features) or blemishes (surface imperfections) are visible at this level of inspection.

What’s the best diamond clarity?

The highest clarity grade is FL, meaning flawless. For a deeper understanding of clarity and to view our clarity chart, explore our Orrling Diamond Guide.

What are diamond clarity grades?

Diamond clarity grades indicate a stone’s purity and the presence or absence of visible inclusions when viewed under 10x magnification. Below is the GIA clarity scale, used throughout the industry. Orrling accepts only diamonds within the FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1 and VS2 ranges.

FL

Flawless—no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.

IF

Internally Flawless—no internal inclusions under 10x; only minor surface features.

VVS1 / VVS2

Very, Very Slightly Included—extremely small inclusions that are difficult to detect.

VS1 / VS2

Very Slightly Included—minor inclusions, still small and not easily seen without magnification.

SI1 / SI2

Slightly Included—noticeable inclusions under 10x but often not visible to the naked eye.

I1 / I2 / I3

Included—more noticeable inclusions, which may affect transparency and brilliance.

What’s the difference between clarity and color?

Clarity describes a diamond’s purity and the visibility of natural inclusions under 10x magnification.

Color refers to the subtle body tint found in white diamonds, ranging from completely colorless to slightly warm hues.

What’s the difference between clarity and cut?

Clarity measures the purity of a diamond and how visible its internal and external features are under 10x magnification.

Cut evaluates how a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish influence the way it reflects and returns light—ultimately determining its sparkle.
